A short hiking among cultural ruins in South Greenland.
Sailing from Narsarsuaq, you can explore Qassiarsuk with an experienced guide, experience ruins from centuries ago, and visit some local churches. This excursion combines the experience of sailing and hiking in South Greenland. It is an excellent choice for nature-explorer and history-savvy.
Qassiarsuk is a small settlement. Sheep breeding and partially fishing are the main income in this settlement. Despite its small size, it gains world-wide fame since the famous Viking – Erik the Red – settled here over 1000 years ago. A 3-hour guided excursion will take you through the essence of this tiny yet cosy settlement.
Starting from the busy harbour, we board the boat and sail through the amazing Erik’s fjord with Arctic Adventure guide. You will have the opportunity to enjoy the salty yet refreshing sea breeze along the journey.
After a short and easy sail, we arrive at Qassiarsuk. There are around 2500 sheep in the settlement and around 8000 in the wider area – which outnumbers the residences. We will walk around and explore this settlement with the Arctic Adventure Guide. We visit the ruins of Erik’s farm, the local church, Inuit ruins and maybe the local shop.
Dating back to 985 AD, when Eric the red first arrived, he was deeply favoured by this place and named his farm “Brattahlið”, which means “the steep hill”. Today, even though some historical buildings are in ruins, they are still a significant part of today’s scenery. With the construction work in process, this settlement is lively despite its few residents. With this 3-hour adventure, you will immerse yourself in the natural beauty and historical vibes.
