It is perfect for nature-lovers and history-savvies!
Do you want to stretch your legs and go out for some exercise? Hiking around the UNESCO Ice Fjord and Sermermiut offers you a unique opportunity to view magnificent Ilulissat ice fjord, gigantic icebergs and Inuit ruins from a closer view! The UNESCO World Heritage site with its remains of ancient Inuit camps, and the permafrost will make Sermermiut hiking a must-do activity in Ilulissat.
Icebergs in Ilulissat are so extraordinary and fascinating that the ice fjord awarded UNESCO World Heritage Site status a few years ago. Arctic Adventure guide will pick you up from Hotel Arctic and drive you to the back country of Ilulissat, walk towards the seashore, and observe the icebergs slowly floating towards the sea from a great viewing spot.
During the excursion, we will start at Old Heliport, walk on the wooden track around Sermermiut, and explore the wild nature and ice fjord by hiking on an uneven rocky path. We might make a stop at Kællinge Kløften to have a light refreshment if time and weather allow. With the splendid Disko Bay ahead of you, vast ground under your feet, and icebergs conquering most of your eyesight, you can really feel the power of nature with all your senses.
We will also walk through the sledge dog area either in the beginning or ending of the journey.
Hiking around the UNESCO Ice Fjord and Sermermiut is an all-year-round activity. The surroundings present different yet unique beauty as different seasons passing by. The snow-covered ground in winter, the lively wildflowers in summer, fresh green in spring and fresh breeze in autumn. Ice fjord and Sermermiut awaits you there and always greets you with its wonderful nature.
It is not just a natural site; you can witness the history here as well. Approximately 4000 years ago, Inuit settled here and formed their own culture. During this hike, you can walk past the ancient ruins and discover evidence from the settlements. Our tour guide will tell you the history of Inuit people, their ancestors, and traditions.
Hiking around Ilulissat Ice Fjord and Sermermiut is suitable for everyone. As one of the most visited sights in Ilulissat, Sermermiut is open every day of the year. We will take time to stop for photographs and to enjoy the impressive views. The duration is around 2 hours. However, it may vary based on weather conditions, conditions of participants, and duration of picture times. It is a route full of scenic views, historical marks, and stories. Find out more by exploring it with Arctic Adventure guides!
