South Greenland in summer is decorated by green grass, flourished flowers and the trademark of Greenland – Icebergs. Compared to other parts of Greenland, South Greenland is like a secret garden hidden in this isolated land.

Qaqortoq and Narsarsuaq are two typical destinations in South Greenland with both natural views and historical sites. This 6-day summer journey to South Greenland will enable you to stay four nights in Qaqortoq and one night in Narsarsuaq. A list of excursions is well-selected to add more adventures when you travel to South Greenland.

You can hike in the mountains, join boat tours to the inland ice cap, visit the historical ruins from Viking age and walk around the town. Relax in an Arctic week here in South Greenland!

Day by day & Tour Map

Day 1 Arrive at Qaqortoq through Narsarsuaq

South Greenland is famous for its isolated settlements and fantastic fjords. Taking the Air Greenland flight from Copenhagen, you will arrive at Narsarsauq – the gateway of South Greenland. When you land at the airport, you can get on the shuttle bus with your booking ticket. The shuttle bus will take you to the harbour. From there, you can board on the boat sailing to Qaqortoq through scenic Erik’s Fjord. After around 2 hours (depends on the availability and type of boat), we will arrive at the biggest town of South Greenland – Qaqortoq.

The short sailing journey is full of amazing views and fun: gigantic icebergs, beautiful fjords, and salty sea breeze. You may also have the chance to spot some wildlife if you are lucky! Once we get off the boat, Arctic Adventure guide will transfer you to Hotel Qaqortoq, where you will stay for the following four nights.

Tonight, Hotel Qaqortoq prepares a 2-course dinner as a warm welcome. Enjoy and have a good rest!

Day 2 Qaqortoq: City Walk & Hvalsey Church Ruin

Qaqortoq is the biggest town of South Greenland and often described as the most beautiful town in South Greenland. The ups and downs of history have left this town with many famous ruins from different ages.

Arctic Adventure Guide will join you for a City Walk of Qaqortoq excursion. During the 1-hour excursion, we will walk around the centre of the town, enjoy the beautiful fountain and explore different stone carvings. You will be amazed to find out there are various stone sculptures and carvings scattered around this cosy town.

Apart from the city walk, you can join our optional excursion “Hvalsey Church Ruin” at a surcharge if you are interested. Hvalsey Church Ruin excursion is a boat excursion. Together with Arctic Adventure guide, we will sail to Hvalsey and visit the old Norse ruins. You can hike around this isolated settlement, learn more about the history here and experience the unique buildings from the Norse settlement time. This excursion lasts around 3 hours, including the transfer.

Optional Activities Hvalsey Church Ruin – 3 hours, difficulty 2

Day 3 Qaqortoq: Boat excursion to Inland Ice cap

The various fjord system provides travellers with more opportunities to sail around when travelling to South Greenland. Just head to the busy harbour, jump on a boat, and you can visit the isolated settlements and enjoy the fjord sceneries along the way.

Today, you can explore this town at your own pace. Alternatively, you can join our optional activity – Boat Excursion to Inland Ice Cap to touch the ice!

Arctic Adventure guide will pick you up and drive you to the starting point of this boat excursion. During this 6-hour trip, you will head to the magnificent Twin Glacier. There, we go ashore on a small rock close to the glacier front and touch the ice cap! On the way back, we will pass by Bird’s cliffs and a waterfall. You will have sufficient time to enjoy the views and maybe spot some wildlife.

This excursion takes around 6 hours. Add it to the itinerary during the booking process if you want to explore the fjord and icecap thoroughly.

Optional Activities Boat Excursion to the Inland Ice Cap from Qaqortoq- 6 hours, Difficulty 3

Day 4 Qaqortoq: Hike around Storesøen & Kaffemik

Many locals in Greenland name Qaqortoq “the garden of Greenland”. It is a perfect place for hiking. Today, you can choose to explore this beautiful “national garden” yourself. You can also join our well-selected optional activities to hike around and experience the local culture.

“Hike around Storesøen” is a 12 km hiking route around the beautiful lake “Storesøen”. Arctic Adventure guide will pick you up and head to the starting point together. During the hiking, you can enjoy the magnificent view of nature and peaceful vibes outside the town. Coffee and tea will be served. This optional excursion lasts between 4.5 hours and 5.5 hours.

After exploring nature, do you want to know more about the local life? Kaffemik is the perfect activity that brings you closer to the everyday life of the Greenlandic . Together with Arctic Adventure guide, we head to the house of our warm-hearted host. The hosting family will prepare tea, coffee and a home-made cake. Are you curious about life in the Arctic? Feel free to ask questions and your curiosity to the local host! We can talk about daily life, family gossip and our cultural backgrounds. The duration of the optional Kaffemik is around 1 hour.

Day 5 Narsarsuaq: Short Hike to the Ridge

Today we will say goodbye to Qaqortoq and head to Narsarsuaq for more adventures! There are two ways to go to Narsarsuaq – by helicopter or by boat – it depends on the availability. If the helicopter is available, we will fly in a low altitude over the magnificent Arctic landscape to Narsarsuaq. It’s going to be a memorable way to start a new day of adventure!

But, in the days that the helicopters are not available, we will take the boat and sail through the beautiful fjords.

Arctic Adventure guide will take care of the transportation both in Qaqortoq and Narsarsuaq.

After checking-in at Hotel Narsarsuaq, we can join the optional activity – Shore Hike to the Ridge. Alternatively, you can rest or explore the settlement yourself.

Short Hike to the Ridge is a 3-hour guided hiking excursion. We will walk past a flower valley and hike up to a 300-metre highland. From there, we can overlook streams, fjord and the glacier in the distance.

Tomorrow you will head back home from Narsarsuaq. Why not make the best of the time here by joining our optional excursions?

Day 6 City Walk & Goodbye, Greenland!

With the international airport, Narsarsuaq is the gateway of South Greenland. It also enjoys historic UNESCO world heritage sites from the Viking age, various sheep farms, fertile mountains and fjords with gigantic icebergs.

Before taking the flight back to Copenhagen, we will explore this settlement with Arctic Adventure guide through City Tour of Narsarsuaq.

This 1.5-hour Sightseeing tour will show you the natural sceneries and historical sites in Narsarsuaq. It is a nice way to mark the ending of the 6-day adventure in South Greenland.

Arctic Adventure guide will also transfer you to the airport after sightseeing. We hope you enjoy this summer journey in South Greenland and see you next time!

For this multi-day tour, we receive booking till the 5 weeks prior to the departure time of the excursion. However, please note that limited seats are provided. Late booking may be unavailable. 

Weather in Greenland can be quite unpredictable, thus, cancellations and reschedule may occur.

If the excursion is cancelled due to weather conditions, failure to reach the minimum number of participants or other unpredictable situations, Arctic Adventure ApS reserves the right to cancel the excursion. For excursions cancelled by Arctic Adventure ApS under this situation, our customers will get a 100% refund.
