A perfect tour to combine sailing and hiking in South Greenland!
Igaliku is one of the most beautiful villages in South Greenland. The colourful houses, green valleys and fantastic fjord altogether make this picturesque destination. This excursion will bring you to Itilleq by boat from Narsarsuaq and walk around 3 kilometres to Igaliku. Lunch, transfer and English-speaking guide are included.
The harbour of Narsarsuaq is always busy, and we will start our 8-hour adventure from there. We sail from there to Itilleq through Erik’s Fjord. From Itilelq, we walk around 3 kilometres to Igaliku. In summer, the surroundings are covered in green. It is quite pleasant and relaxing to take a walk in the lively summer vibes. If walking for a rather long distance is not favoured by you, transportation can be arranged at a surcharge if you notify us beforehand.
Igaliku means “the crossing place” in Greenlandic. Back to the old times, this place used to be a place for crossing so that boats and people can save time sailing around. Together with Arctic Adventure Guide, we will visit some Viking and Inuit ruins, Cathedral ruins, farm ruins and cemetery. You can experience the marks of history vividly there.
After lunch, we walk through the village back to Itilleq, and from there we will sail back to Narsarsuaq to mark an ending to today’s adventure.
Sheep holding is essential in South Greenland, and there is no exception for Igaliku. In this excursion, we will pass by groups of sheep in some areas. Don’t you wonder how the locals maintain the grass field? In Greenland, the youth must volunteer to do some community service, and planting fields is one of them! The areas you will pass by in this excursion might be planted by those young volunteers!
In Greenland, Igaliku is regarded as a more exclusive area. Why? One reason accepted by most people is that many prominent personalities in Greenland live, or have vacation homes here (former Greenlandic members of parliament, the artist Aka Høegh and the Danish actor Nikolaj Coster-Waldau – known from the HBO-series Game Of Thrones).
Don’t you want to experience this cosy, isolated village yourself?
